Cardoso, others assume office as CBN confirms Emefiele resigned
Dr. Olayemi Cardoso, the nominee for the position of Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, officially assumed office on Friday.
Cardoso assumed duty as the Acting Governor of the CBN pending confirmation by the Senate, which is currently on their annual recess, according to a statement by Dr. Isa AbdulMumin, the Director of Corporate Communications at the CBN.
It was also noted that the Deputy Governors-designate assumed office following the resignation of the outgoing deputies.
The statement read, “Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso, recently nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has on Friday, September 22, 2023, formally assumed duty, in an acting capacity, as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, pending his confirmation by the Senate. This follows the resignation of Mr. Godwin Emefiele as Governor of the CBN.
“Similarly, the Deputy Governors-Designate have also assumed duty, in acting capacities, sequel to the formal resignation of Mr. Folashodun Shonubi, Mrs. Aishah Ahmad, Mr. Edward Adamu, and Dr. Kingsley Obiora as Deputy Governors of the CBN.”
Emem Usoro, Muhammad Abdullahi-Dattijo, Philip Ikeazor, and Bala Bello are the Deputy Governors-designate.
The statement said that on Friday, September 22, 2023, a brief ceremony was held at the bank’s head office in Abuja, during which Dr. Cardoso and his colleagues took the appropriate oaths of office.
They have subsequently started working on implementing the federal government’s monetary and financial sector policies, it was further said.
Yemi Adaramodu, the Senate’s spokesperson and chairman of the committee on media and publicity, told newsmen that the Senate would screen the governor of the top bank and other CBN executives as soon as it received a communication from the executive branch to that effect upon returning from its annual recess.
Earlier, the Central Bank of Nigeria postponed the Monetary Policy Committee’s 293rd meeting, which was scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, September 25 and 26, 2023.
