Lagos government re-opens five markets in Mushin

The Lagos State Government has announced the reopening of five markets in the Mushin area of the state.

According to a statement released Friday, the markets were temporarily shut down due to “environmental infractions, including indiscriminate waste dumping.”

The five markets that were reopened are Mushin Main market, Ojuwoye, Awolowo, Irepodun, and Daleko markets.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, also stated why the state government decided to temporarily close the markets, saying it was necessary.

According to Wahab, “Our decision to close the Mushin markets was rooted in the urgent need to rectify environmental malpractices that posed a threat to public health and the overall well-being of people living in the area.”

Responding to that commissioner’s statement, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, said authorities will rest when the state “assumes a cleaner and healthier form.”
