Benue Assembly renames State-owned varsity

The Benue State House of Assembly has once again amended the law guiding the name of the state-owned university in Makurdi, settling on a more concise title.

Under the new amendment, the institution will now be officially known as Father Adasu University, Makurdi, replacing the longer Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi.

The lawmakers decided on Thursday’s plenary after considering the report of the House Standing Committee on Higher Education.

Leading the debate, Mr. Saater Tiseer (APC/Mbagwa), Majority Leader, explained that the earlier name, “Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi,” was unnecessarily lengthy.

Originally known as Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi, it was first renamed in December 2024.

During the same session, the Assembly also approved amendments upgrading the College of Education, Katsina-Ala, and the College of Education, Oju, into degree-awarding institutions.

Mr Alfred Emberga, presiding Speaker of the House, instructed Dr Bem Mela, House Clerk, to read the bills for a third time before declaring them passed.
