Deputy Senate president demands retraction, apology from Trump over military action threat
Senator Jibrin Barau, Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, has called on Donald Trump, President of the United States, to withdraw his recent comments threatening military action in Nigeria over alleged Christian genocide.
Barau described the US President’s statement as “unacceptable and un-American,” urging Trump to follow international legal processes if he had genuine concerns.
“The President of the United States cannot just come out and say, ‘Oh, you are doing this, and we are going to attack you.’ Nigeria is a sovereign nation,” the deputy senate president maintained.
“Whatever you feel about our country, follow the legal route, go to the United Nations, and get a resolution. But to go that route, I feel, is quite unacceptable. It’s against international law.”
He maintained that Nigeria would not be intimidated by such remarks, insisting that diplomacy and due process must guide international relations.
“We are not scared to say the truth. If Trump were here, I would tell him, ‘What you did goes against international law. The route you’re taking is not the best route to take,’” he stated.
Trump’s statement has stirred mixed reactions globally after he threatened a military onslaught against terrorists in Nigeria over alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria, sparking diplomatic concerns and calls for restraints.
