Fire guts highrise building in Lagos, bank staff jump for safety

A section of Afriland Towers, which houses a branch of the United Bank for Africa, and other companies in the Marina area of Lagos Island, has been gutted by fire.

Details of the cause of the fire are still sketchy, but in a video trending on social media, some of the building’s occupants, including UBA staff, were seen attempting to jump down from the storey building, while others were using a ladder.

The workers were captured in the video trying to escape through the windows.

At the time of this report, emergency responders have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

Efforts to contain the inferno are ongoing.
