Four commissioners resign, dump Fubara in 24 hours

The crisis plaguing Rivers State has deepened as two more commissioners have resigned from their positions in the state executive council.

George-Kelly Alabo, the Commissioner for Works, and his counterpart from the Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Inime Chinwenwo-Aguma, tendered their resignation letters on Thursday.

The letter, dated December 14, was addressed to the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, through the Secretary to the State Government.

Alabo, a staunch loyalist of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, stated that he resigned based on the dictates of his conscience.

His letter, titled ‘Resignation as Honourable Commissioner for Works, Rivers State,’ reads: “My decision to resign is anchored on my conscience, personal philosophy, and professional ethics. This decision was taken after deep introspection.”

This is coming after the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Zacchaeus Adangor, SAN, and the Commissioner for Special Duties, Emeka Woke, resigned from Fubara’s cabinet.

The crisis rocking the state took a new twist when 27 lawmakers loyal to Nyesome Wike, former governor of the state, defected from the People’s Democratic Party to the All Progressives’ Congress.

Lawmakers loyal to the state governor therefore declared their seats vacant while calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct fresh elections to replace them.

The state government demolished the House of Assembly complex on Wednesday, claiming that it is no longer safe for legislative business.
