Media experts, communication researchers to discuss issues in artificial intelligence

Media and communication researchers across Nigeria and the world will converge on the University of Lagos for an International Academic Conference and the Annual General Meeting of the Association of Media and Communication Researchers of Nigeria (AMCRON).

Themed Issues in Artificial Intelligence: the media and democracy, the conference, which is the fifth in the series, has speakers drawn from academia, industry, and the public and private sectors. According to the organizers, the conference is open to media practitioners, academia, policy makers and social researchers, among others.

The fifth in the series is scheduled to hold from 3 to 4 December 2025.

In a statement, Prof. Eserinune McCarty Mojaye, President of AMCRON, urged media practitioners, academia and policy makers, and other stakeholders to attend the event, highlighting the importance of exploring AI’s impact on media practices and democratic participation.

Dr. Kehinde Oyesomi, Coordinator of the Southwest Zone of the AMCRON Conference, also encouraged attendance, emphasising the need to examine AI’s opportunities and challenges in these domains critically.

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is profoundly reshaping societies, economies, and cultures. In the realm of mass media and democracy, AI has introduced both opportunities and challenges. On one hand, AI-driven technologies are transforming news production, content distribution, audience engagement, and access to information. On the other hand, they raise pressing concerns about misinformation, deep fakes, data privacy, ethical use, algorithmic bias, and the erosion of trust in democratic institutions.

According to the organisers, this conference provides a platform for scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and industry leaders to critically examine the intersections of these three domains. It seeks to explore how AI is reshaping media practices and democratic participation, to interrogate the risks and unintended consequences of unchecked technological adoption, and to chart pathways for harnessing AI responsibly to strengthen democratic values and the integrity of public communication.
