NDDC commences repairs on East-West road to ease commuter pains
Authorities of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) have initiated emergency repairs on the failed sections of the East-West Road between Warri in Delta State and Benin in Edo State.
The focus will be on dilapidated sections in Ibadulume, Amukpe roundabout, Mosoga, and Ologbo, which have caused significant distress to commuters.
Accompanied by Sir Victor Antai, the Executive Director of Projects, and other officials from the Commission, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the NDDC Managing Director, inspected the ongoing repairs over the weekend.
Ogbuku was thankful to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for issuing the directive to urgently restore these critical sections of the road, which connects six oil-producing states in the Niger Delta.
“Following the presidential directive to intervene swiftly, the NDDC has mobilized a civil engineering firm to carry out remedial work. This will help minimize the suffering and gridlock faced by commuters while the main construction continues,” Ogbuku stated.
He also commended the Federal Government for responding promptly to public outcry and re-awarding the contract for the East-West Road project, which had been abandoned for years. Ogbuku expressed confidence that the ongoing repairs, supervised by the Federal Ministry of Works, would provide a lasting solution.
The NDDC boss urged local communities and commuters to be patient and cooperative during the construction period, assuring them that the repairs would be completed quickly. “We have mobilized contractors and equipment, and I ask for understanding from the communities. The bad sections will be fixed in a short time, with the contractor committing to complete the job within two weeks.”
Mr. Adara Opeoluwa, Managing Director of the construction firm handling the project, briefed the NDDC team, revealing that the repairs will cover a three-kilometer stretch, focusing on critical areas including Ibadulume, Amukpe roundabout, Mosoga, and Ologbo.
