Tension in Kano as tribunal sack Yusuf Abba, declares APC’s Gawuna as winner

There’s palpable tension in the ancient city of Kano following the ruling of the Kano State Election Petitions Tribunal on Wednesday, which sacked the Governor, Yusuf Abba Kabir of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, in the March 18th, 2023, governorship election.

The tribunal, therefore, declared Nasir Gawuna, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, the winner of the March 18 governorship poll.

Locals could be seen racing helter-skelter about the neighborhood, as they hurried back to their separate homes for safety.

A scuffle was witnessed along Murtala Muhammad Way, close to Kano Club, as drivers avoided being involved by driving in one lane.

Some Tarauni communities held modest festivities, singing songs dedicated to Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna.

Some supporters could also be spotted performing bike stunts while carrying the APC flag.

Earlier, the Election Petition Tribunal’s three-man panel, presided over by Justice Oluyemi Akintan-Osadebay, virtually started the proceedings just before 10:00 a.m. and transmitted from Miller Road, Kano.

It also withdrew the Certificate of Return that the Independent National Electoral Commission had given to Yusuf.

Yusuf polled 1,019,602 votes to defeat Gawuna, who scored 890,705 votes, according to INEC.
