Tenant dies during rent dispute with landlord in Oyo
A tenant, who was simply identified as Olayeni, has died following a heated dispute with his landlord over rent payment in the Oriyangi area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident happened on Wednesday. According to a statement released by the Oyo State Police Command via its official X (formerly Twitter) page on Sunday, the landlord had invited a friend to intervene during the confrontation, but the situation turned violent.
The statement explained, “On September 3, 2025, a tragic event in Ibadan’s Oriyangi area resulted in a tenant’s death after a dispute with his landlord over rent payments. During the altercation, the landlord’s associate allegedly struck the tenant, Olayeni, leading to his collapse. Emergency responders arrived promptly, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.”
The command confirmed that both the landlord and his associate have been arrested as investigations continue.
“The suspects have been arrested, and a thorough investigation is underway. The Oyo State Police Command expresses condolences to the victim’s family and assures that justice will be served,” the statement concluded.
This marks the third time in less than a month that a minor dispute has escalated into a deadly confrontation.
On September 3, the Delta State Police Command arrested a 21-year-old mother of two, identified simply as Lilian, for allegedly stabbing her partner to death during a domestic altercation at the Ijanpa Road area of the state.
Similarly, on August 29, at Mandilas Market on Lagos Island, a trader identified as Ebuka Adindu from Abia State fatally stabbed Sodiq Ibrahim from Kogi State over an argument.
